What is A World of Curiosities by Louise Penny All About?

Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir grow more concerned as the townspeople get ready for a special festival. After a long absence, a young man and lady have reemerged in the lives of the Sûreté du Québec investigators. When their unstable mother was killed, the two were still very young, leaving them scarred and broken. They have now arrived in Three Pines village.

But for what purpose? The incident that first brought Gamache and Beauvoir together, that awful case, rushes back into Gamache’s and Beauvoir’s minds. Did the death of their mother leave them permanently damaged? Have those horrible wounds, which have been covered up for years, become worse and are about to erupt?

A letter written by a long-dead stone mason is uncovered when Chief Inspector Gamache investigates, raising him concern. The author relates his horror as he bricks up a room in an attic someplace in the village. The letter, which is 160 years old, is dreadful in every word. The villagers choose to enter the room after discovering it.

Gamache, Beauvoir, and the locals uncover a world of wonders when the bricks are taken out. But the head of homicide quickly understands there’s more going on in that room than first appears. In addition to secret messages warning of mayhem and retaliation, there are puzzles inside puzzles.

When that is opened, an old foe is let loose into their world, their lives and right into Armand Gamache’s residence.
